Funny Things Kids Say

1

I told the three older kids that they had to wash dishes one night, and I wanted Savi to rinse. A little bit later, Savi was in my bedroom sobbing inconsolably, saying that the dishes were all rinsed, and that the other two hadn't let her do any of her work. About a half hour later - when I had sent them all back to the kitchen because Kyrie reported that she was still doing dishes - Kyrie came in and said, "Elijah was looking out the window and he said "wow", and it's pretty, so I can use the camera to take a picture?" When I replied that she could, Savi came back in whining that there were only two dishes left, one for Kyrie and one for Elijah, and she still hadn't gotten to do any. So I told her to sneak back in while Kyrie was taking a picture and do one of those dishes. She left, quite happy with this idea.

This was the resulting photo.

Julie was in the kitchen annoying Elijah while he was trying to make his nightly chocolate milk. When no one responded to his requests to get Julie out of the kitchen, he finally said, "Fine, I'll save your life", and carried her out.

If I only could just get a little higher, I would need saving for real.

3

I just thought y'all would like to know that the Piggies don't like the taste of the grass anymore, and that's why they steal the Angry Bird's eggs (to eat). An early fan save on the part of Elijah?

In this house, babies can play Angry Birds while getting their diaper changed.

4

Savi: Mom, can I eat this carrot?
Me: Oh, it's lunchtime. Let's have lunch.
-after lunch-
Savi: Mom, can I have this carrot now?
Me: ...... Sure.

We prefer cookies and cake, please.

5

We discovered this playground less than two blocks from our apartment. There were three girls playing there this one day; two of them were sisters. The kids all got into a game that involved covering your eyes and getting people out.

So, Little Sister was the one who was supposed to cover her eyes, and it turned out that Big Sister won. Other Girl piped up with, "You cheated! You just wanted your sister to win!"

I had to laugh when Little Sister's response was, "Well, she's my sister."

I think this sister wants to be put down.

6

Savi: "This apple tastes like pear".

Why are you looking at me like that? Savi said it, not me.

7

Mom: "Elijah, when was Jesus born?"
Elijah: "Umm. Maybe.... 1984?"

That was WAY before I was born, Mom, and video games are so much more interesting.

8

Savi: "I used to be Grandpa's little angel, but I'm not anymore." 1

I'm Daddy's little angel, though.

9

I was driving home from my friend's house and Savi informed me (almost tearfully) that she had left her jacket behind; she said that she had dropped it somewhere and she didn't have it now. I decided not to go back for it, since I'd be seeing that friend again soon. Then Savi said, "Oh, I didn't realize I hadn't zipped it up." Turns out, she was wearing the jacket. She just hadn't noticed because, as she said, she hadn't zipped it.

Your jacket hides better than you do, sweetie.

1. She was referring to the "Grandpa's Little Angel" sweatshirt that she used to wear when she was little, but now gets worn by Julie.

Funny Things Kids Do

1

Savi walks around behind the chair I'm sitting in, bumping against it several times, and not being quiet at all. Then she calls out, "Mom, where am I?". When I answer, "behind the chair", she says in a wondering tone, "How did you know where I was?".

Bloodthirsty Pirate Jules can find you, too.
Even if you try to hide in the bedroom.

2

Gabe or Julie had spilled some water on my bedroom floor, and I asked Kyrie to get a towel and clean it up. Kyrie said in reply, "It's your mess, you clean it up."

I laughed at Kyrie instead of reprimanding her, since her tone was not disrespectful. But the kids did get the shaking finger when they kept trying to "help" Gabe unwrap his presents or immediately took the toys out of his hands.
I'm too cool to clean up.

3

Savi: "I like that [new] toothpaste! The other kind of toothpaste is so kind of not good."

Vampire Bloodthirsty Pirates don't need toothpaste. (Can you see how the outer teeth came in before the inner ones on top?)

4

While eating the potatoes Ken cooked for breakfast...
Savi: Knock Knock.
Me: Who's there?
Savi: Potato
Me: Potato who?
Savi (in a cute high-pitched voice): "Oh no, a big potato is eating us!"

It's the hot dogs, not the potatoes, that just have a way of defeating Gabe.

5

Savi, handing me Ken's whiskey glass, said, "Here's Dad's communion cup!"

That's not a communion cup, either, baby girl.

Funny Things Kids Do

1

Elijah: "Julie, how about instead of eating that pen [as he takes it away from her], you eat this graham cracker [as he hands it to her]?"

This is not revenge on Julie's part. Really.

2

At the library:
Me, to Elijah: "I think you would like this Hardy Boys book."
Elijah, looking at how thick it is: "No thanks."
Me: "It's about two boys having adventures and stuff, and having to find the bad guys."
Elijah: "Ok, let's get it."

Getting Elijah to read a book is almost as difficult as shoring up this dam's leak.

3

Savi: "Look Mom, the ipad put red dots under my name."
Me: "Yes, that's because it doesn't know your name is a real word and it thinks you misspelled it. Here, let me see if I can fix that."
Savi: "No, I like it like that."

Someone at the reunion taught Savi some poses... or tried to?

4

Savi: "Mom, can I have just one more beer?"
[She meant root beer.]

Who doesn't like beer? I mean, besides me and half my family?

5

One morning I told Gabe to go get some clothes to put on. He came back holding up pajama bottoms in one hand, and a pillowcase in the other.

He may have learned the futility of chasing birds this day. Or he might not have.

6

Savi: "Mom, can I have some coffee?"
["I mean tea."]

Savi wanted tea because Kyrie had some; Kyrie wanted to pose because Savi did. I want to call this a "stork pose". Clearly it's a classic that should be added to the repertoire of all professional models.

Funny Things Kids Say

I should have done this post last Friday, but I was crazy tired b/c Julie's not always letting me get much sleep, so I'm just getting around to it now.

1. Kyrie: "Mom, look, I trapped an ant in this [plastic, Easter] egg. Can I feed the ant?"

Like ants, Jules can sometimes be found in odd corners where she doesn't belong.

2. Savi: "Somehow, things got messy in here." Yes, it's a deep mystery how your toys got spread all over your bedroom floor.
And it's a mystery how Julie got here.

3. Me: "Savi, go look for your dad's other sandal."
-pause
Me: "Savi, go stand in the corner until you're ready to look for it."
Savi: "I have to put the ipad away."
*puts the ipad away*
Me: "Look in the kitchen."
*she looks in the kitchen*
Me: "Look under the table and the chairs."
Savi: "Nope, not there."
Me: "Look behind the couch."
Savi: "No, but I did only find one of dad's sandals back there."
Me: "You found one of dad's sandals behind the couch?"
Savi: "Yes."
Me: "That's what you were supposed to be looking for in the first place."

Talk about a "hand in the cookie jar" moment.

4. Me: "Who's in the kitchen? Savi, are you in there?"
Savi, from the kitchen, "No."

Her siblings think she needs to be a hippie. Or they think this is just what headbands are for.

5. Kyrie, to Elijah: "I'm going with you." [Emphatically adds] "No matter what." Then, without really pausing, "No, I'm going with Savi, so we can talk about what we're going to do."

I have no idea how I managed to catch those exact expressions.

6. On the summer solstice, June 21st, the longest day of the year, round about dinnertime or bedtime Elijah asked me, "Today was a really short day, wasn't it, Mom?"

He decided to pose like this. On his own.

7. Tv commercial: Is the IRS stalking you?
Me: "Ken, is the IRS stalking you?"
Ken: "Yes, it's right outside the window."
a bit more back and forth
Savi then wandered into the kitchen, looking outside and trying to get a glimpse of who was outside that we were talking about.

"Lut Mommy! Lut Mommy!"

8. Gabe's vocabulary has been expanding very noticeably lately, and he's getting more adventurous in what he tries to say. But he still has conversations like this sometimes:

Gabe: "Lut Dahdee."
Ken: "Luh Bobby?"
Gabe: "Lut Dahdee."
Me: "He's saying, 'Look Daddy' ".
Ken: "Look? Look at what?"
Gabe: "Lut Dahdee." [pointing]
Ken: "What is it?"
Me: "I think it's bug."
Ken: "Is it a bug?" [getting up to look]
Gabe: "Yeah."
Ken: "What kind of bug? Is it a spider?"
Gabe: "Yeah."
Me: "Or a fly."
Ken: "Is it a fly?"
Gabe: "Yeah."
Ken: "Is it a spider fly?"
Gabe: "Yeah."
Ken: "Is it a flying spider?"
Gabe: "Yeah."

Not a flying squirrel. A very bold one, though.

9. Yet another conversation:
Savi: "I like those zucchinis."
Ken: "What, you like bikinis?"
Savi: "Yeah. I want some to eat."

Not as yummy as Dad's kind of peanut butter (Jif), but still good. Even Gabe can say "pea buher  poon?"

Funny Things Kids Say

1. I was reading the Easter story to the kids on Easter Friday. I think it was because of the angels in the story that one of the kids brought up fairies. Elijah asked me right out if fairies were real. Thinking of the fairy books they've been getting from the library, I said, "No. Fairies are just for pretend."

Elijah responded by asking, "Then who puts the money under Kyrie's pillow?"

Erk! I was not thinking of the Tooth Fairy. And Elijah hasn't even lost his first tooth yet. (I'm not quite sure how he took my response, which was to guffaw with laughter and then try vainly to shove the cat back in the bag with some sort of hypothetical question like, "I don't know; maybe they exist after all?")

I'm putting up random pictures. This is me dressed up for my anniversary night out, with the kids hamming it up.

2. Kyrie got these scapulars from her First Communion class. Savi comes into my bedroom Fri morning (5/6) wearing the green scapular on a chain around her neck. She says, in a near-tearful tone of voice, "Kyrie gave me this so it can heal my toe which did get hurt and was bleeding."

Savi, with Gabe peeking in on the left.

3. I sent Elijah and Savi to stand in various corners b/c they were squabbling. Apparently Gabe was feeling left out, b/c he went to a corner, looked at me and said, "toenah?"["corner?"]. When I said, "You can be in the corner if you want to", he smiled and turned around to face the corner.

Gabe tried to apply lotion to himself.

4. To set the scene for this, let me point out that the available floorspace in our bathroom is maybe 3 by 4 feet. And half of that was taken up with laundry piles. So I'm getting dressed after a shower, and Savi comes in and says, "By the way, mom, did you even notice that Julie is in here?". No, no I did not notice the large 7 month old baby that I've been trying not to trip over for the last five minutes.

She's like a cat. You're standing by the table and all of a sudden something brushes against your leg. Really made me jump  one of the times that she did that.

5. Elijah, with Kyrie's help, was trying to make himself some chocolate milk in the kitchen. When he pulled out the chocolate syrup, he said, "It even smells like chocolate!" Um. What did you expect chocolate syrup to smell like?

6. Kyrie: "I read where you wrote "men are not angels". Me: "I did write that." Kyrie: "So that means angels are women or girls."

The kids' room got mold, so they spent a couple nights sleeping on the floor of my room while I dealt with it.

7. Gabe brought me a little Lego guy whose bottom half he could not get to fit into the top half. "Dah doopih" he said. It took me only a moment to figure out that he meant, "That's stupid." I was torn between angst over the other kids using the word, and amusement over Gabe using it for the first time.

8. I was looking at the massive volume of granola that I made, and I wondered aloud, "Where am I going to store all this granola?". Elijah promptly grinned and said, "In my mouth!".

Gabe really likes Julie. He INSISTED on feeding her.

A Kid's Easter Proclamation?

Elijah: "Now that Jesus is still alive again, maybe he can fix the flooding."
Me: "What flooding?"
Elijah: "Remember the place with all the water, because the thing broke? And the earthquake?"
Me: "You mean Japan?"
Elijah: "Yeah."

So I explained that I didn't think the land was still flooded, and that the Japanese were trying to rebuild everything. But I thought his connection of Easter with Japan was very interesting.

Overheard

The kids are playing in the bedroom; well, they're sitting on the top bunk eating candy while Kyrie is talking. She's pretending to be someone or other, but I hear her talking about Santa and Mom and some others.

Then I hear: "By the way, I'm not really real."

Boys

What do you think of the palm branch as a symbol of? The kingship of Jesus? Worship? Peace? Bananas? California and Florida and other sunny places?

I bet you don't think of it as a machine gun.

Which apparently my son does.

Ken now gets to chalk up "Stop shooting people during church" as yet another one of those "things you never thought you'd have to say to your kids" things. :)

Are you Magnetized?

Elijah, coming crying out of the bedroom: "Savi keeps lying on me and saying I'm magnetized when I'm not."

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Ah, kids.

Kyrie, holding a paintbrush: "Mom! Gabe put this in paint and then put it in his mouth!"

Gabe comes running in a moment later, crying, and says: "Da da da Teerwee."

(The 'da da da' thing is just something he usually says before he says whatever word he's actually thinking.)

So, yes, my two year old son is trying to tell on his big sister for stopping him from eating paint.

Gabe Thinks Ken is God?

So I was sitting in the bedroom changing Gabe's diaper when I heard the front door open and Ken come in.

Me, to Gabe: "Who is that?  Who came in?  Is it Santa Clause?"
Gabe: "Nooo."
Me: "Is it a car?"
Gabe: "Nooo."
Me: "Who is it?"
Gabe: "Gog."
Me: "God?"
Gabe: "Yeah."

Boy's Dream

Elijah: "I had a wonderful dream last night.  I still remember it."
Me: "What happened?"
Elijah: "First we were playing.  Then something was plugged in, and we had to run outside before our house blew up because there was a bomb in it.  And then all the other houses blew up because they all had bombs in them.  And we ran and ran and finally we found one house that didn't have any bombs in it. And then a flying mitten came along and I jumped on it and I flew.  I flew up to outer space.  And you know why I liked being in outer space?"
Me: "Why?"
Elijah: "Because I got to kill bad guys."

He is SUCH a boy.

Ken's Latest Insallment of "Things I Never Thought I'd Hear"

Kyrie: "Bake my kitty! Bake my kitty!"

(It was a clay kitty.)

More Tidbits

Savi, at breakfast, chanting: "Who are the greatest of all?  Mommy and Daddy!"
Elijah responds, also chanting: "Who are the greatest of all?  Jesus and God!"
Savi: "Who are the poopiest of all?"

***********************************

Gabe's versions of people's names:

Kyrie:  "Tyrwee"
Elijah:  "Yaya"
Savi: "Ahvee"
Gabe: "Deeb"
Julie: "Dulee"
Mom: "MOOMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"  (He never just says Mommy; it's always a loud call for attention.)
Dad: "DAADDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
Brittany: "Bitnee"
Shane: "zschane" [where 'zsch' is some sort of wet sound that doesn't quite sound like any one letter.]

Oh, and he totally asked for a pen yesterday.  It came out like "Ban? Ban?" And when I showed him I didn't have any (it was quiet time, and we were in his bedroom), he said "Gone?" again.  In the last week or two, his speaking skills have really shot up.

***********************************

Gabe, running up to me in the bedroom: "Lee!?"
Me: "Lee?"
Gabe: "Nope."

**********************************

It's hard to look at this and not think it means something: Google Maps: Mass Animal Deaths.  They all seem to be around the beginning of the new year.  So... think God is trying to tell us to repent and change our evil ways, or worse will come, sort of like with Jonah?

Tidbits

Gabe came and insistently handed me the iPad box (which has a picture of the iPad on the front of the box).  "Da da da ah-pad", he says.  "There's no ipad in there; Savi has the ipad", I say.  But he doesn't relent; he keeps handing me the box.  So finally I open it up for him and show him that it's empty.

He looks at it searchingly, and then says, "Gone?".  You go, Gabe!  His speaking skills are really blossoming all of a sudden.  And yes, the ipad is gone.  Savi has it, just like I said.

*********************************************

At Kyrie's First Communion class last night, the issue of a "covenant" got brought up, and the teacher asked the kids if they knew what a covenant was.  I was highly amused when two of the boys said that they knew the word from Halo.

Overheard

I was intensely focused on reading one of those math things I'm reading, when Kyrie asked something. I don't even know what, I just heard "Mom, can I ...".  So I asked her not to ask me something while I was concentrating.  I meant 'go ask Dad'.  But then I heard her say, "Ohhh kayyy.  I will take that to mean 'yes'."

Funny Things Kids Say

Me: "Clean up your room."
Elijah: "Aww, I knew I should have stayed home today."
Kyrie: "What do you mean? This is your home. [pause]  Are you a vampire bat?"
